Patuxent River Watershed
Hero:
Pam King Pam joined the Patuxent River Commission when it expanded to include the role of the Tributary Team. Immediately, she rolled up her sleeves and got to work. She became the first Chair of the Public Outreach Workgroup. She volunteered to write and administer a grant for a survey and database of organizations doing outreach in the Patuxent River watershed. The administration turned out to be disproportionately large compared to the award amount. She passed the baton of Chair on, but remained very active with the workgroup as its activities focused in the Reservoirs watershed. She represents the southern Maryland Counties, but was instrumental in organizing the first ever "Watershed Awareness Day" for the upper watershed. Most recently, she developed an education module for use in schools that uses basic math and reasoning skills to determine the correct amount of fertilizer to use on lawns. She is an outspoken supporter of efforts to identify and implement effective public outreach and the importance of motivating individual behavior changes for any success in long-term restoration. After ten years on the Commission, she remains one of its strongest supporters and a leading advocate for the River. |
