Get Connected--What You Can Do

All of us who live on the land are linked to the water by many pathways, including our lawns and driveways, our faucets, and our storm drains. Wherever you live, here are some things you can do to protect your watershed and help your local Tributary Team protect clean water in neighborhood streams, rivers and the Chesapeake Bay.

Be Wise--Don't Over-Fertilize
  • Use fertilizers sparingly. Have your soil tested by the Cooperative Extension Service. Call 1-800-342-2507 for an inexpensive soil test kit.
  • Try composting to recycle yard wastes and reduce fertilizer use.
  • Avoid getting fertilizer on sidewalks and driveways.
  • Find out what chemicals your lawn service uses. Are there alternatives?

Stop Septic Seepage

  • Pump out your septic system once every three years.
  • Don't use the toilet as a garbage can.
  • Use your garbage disposal sparingly to reduce grease and solids in your septic system, and reduce stress on municipal wastewater treatment plants.

Create a Bay-Friendly Yard

  • Plant trees, shrubs and ground cover to protect bare soil and reduce runoff.
  • Create a "rain garden" to keep rain water in your yard to replenish plants.
  • Call the Cooperative Extension Service at 1-800-342-2507 for a list of native plants that do well in our area.

Conserve Water

  • Fix leaking faucets.
  • Install a water conservation shower head.
  • Don't let water run while washing dishes or brushing teeth.

Walk Your Watershed

  • Take notice of how water flows in your neighborhood; walk your local creek or stream.
  • Note the name and direction of the streams and rivers below the bridges you cross.
  • Educate your parents or children on local geography, native plants and animals.

Support River and Bay Restoration Efforts

  • Buy a "Treasure the Chesapeake" license plate
  • Check line 63 on your Maryland State Income Tax Form to help save the Bay and protect endangered species.

Maryland's Tributary Teams -- comprised of local citizens, farmers, business leaders and government officials appointed by the Governor -- are working to keep your local waterways clean and healthy. The health of the streams and rivers that flow through your neighborhood directly affect the health of the Chesapeake Bay. By controlling pollution upstream -- in the streams and rivers that feed the Chesapeake Bay -- Maryland's Tributary Teams are working to make a difference in our neighborhoods, our cities and towns, and the entire Chesapeake Bay watershed.
