Maryland’s Aquatic Resources Education Grant reimbursement program assists public and private schools (Grades K-12) and school systems by providing teacher training and funding for aquatic resource education projects. In partnership, the ARE Coordinator works directly with the Environmental Education Specialist from the Maryland State Department of Education in providing regional teacher training at Aquatic Resource Education Grants Conferences Each conference provides workshops that have a statewide focus and workshops that have a regional focus and that address current MD DNR issues and initiatives that relate to aquatic resources.

The workshops are provided to give educators training in specific aquatic related topics and to provide ideas for classroom and school-based projects. The conferences also provide the opportunity to meet and to get to know the resource people that provide information and assistance with projects.

Educators are encouraged to formulate a project and then to apply for project funding. To encourage partnerships, several funding sources, including the ARE Grant Program funding, are presented in a grant writing workshop. Conference participants are also given resource materials and lists so that technical expertise and support beyond the conference can be obtained.

Aquatic Resource Education Projects that incorporate student service learning and community involvement are recommended. Educators involving children in the project from the beginning, including the grant writing process is encouraged.

This program has funded hundreds of projects in all 24 school districts in Maryland over the past fifteen years.
