Braddock Middle School Students
Volunteer at Green Ridge State Forest Students earn
service-learning hours working on an
environmental service project
Sixth grade students from Braddock Middle School
came to
Green Ridge State Forest (GRSF) recently
for cross –curriculum service learning
activities. At GRSF these students participated
in environmental and career initiatives.
Amanda Nash, Erika McKenney, and Kara Kennell,
(Service Learning Coordinator for Allegany
County Public Schools) brought 22 students to
GRSF to earn a portion of their required service
learning credits.
While at GRSF, the students planted apple trees
funded by the National Wild Turkey Federation at
the Kirk Orchard area as part of an ongoing
habitat improvement project. After planting the
trees, the students enjoyed a picnic lunch and a
trout fishing opportunity assisted by GRSF and
Maryland Fresh Water Fisheries Division staff.
During lunch, Mark Beals, GRSF assistant forest
manager and event organizer, talked to the
students about careers in the environmental
field. “This is the third year students have had
the opportunity to visit GRSF. “It is a
wonderful place for our students to be involved
with nature, said Mrs. Kennell.” Mark and the
staff are outstanding to work with as well.
“This day gives our students a hands-on
opportunity to learn about the forest, trees,
and wildlife, and environmental careers” said
Ms. Nash. “Activities like this expose our
students to science, technology, engineering,
and math.”
