Training Overview

Prior to entering the classroom, TEAM volunteers undertake a hands-on training program. Each volunteer attends a full-day training workshop. Identical workshops are offered in different locations around Maryland. Throughout the year, workshops will be scheduled to provide additional training on more specific topics, including presentation skills and equipment usage. A list of the core training workshops is provided below.

Core Training Topics:

  1. Chesapeake Bay Watershed
  2. Maryland Streams I & II
  3. Oysters & Oyster Reefs
  4. Horseshoe Crabs
  5. Chesapeake Watermen

In addition to our core training workshops, TEAM offers volunteers other training opportunities. Our field workshop series gives volunteers extensive outdoor field experiences on a variety of Maryland’s natural resources. In winter, indoor lectures and workshops help to broaden a volunteer’s knowledge about our environment. Examples of these opportunities include wetlands canoe trips, identification workshops, field trips to DNR lands, bird banding, and more.

Goal of TEAM Training Workshops

TEAM training provides volunteers with the knowledge and skills they will need to conduct classroom programs confidently. Volunteers come away from the training with a new understanding of the Chesapeake Bay and how its many components interact.

Oyster Training

Fisheries staff will introduce volunteers to the oyster, its anatomy and the fisheries issues surrounding it. This may include a trip on an oyster boat to dredge up some example oysters or bring live specimens to the training site. This is followed by a review and demonstration of TEAM’s oyster reef classroom program.
