Award Size Mackerel

Type: Chesapeake
Region:
Location: The Bay

We were fishing for bluefish and we went to a ship and I casted a firetiger lure out and brought it in. I thought I had a really big blue, and when it got close enough that I could see it’s markings I yelled at the top of my lungs that it’s a Spanish Mackerel. After it ran 5 times I got it in and my dad netted it. The fish was 23.5 inches and I was even more excited because it was a citation too! The next day we devoured it and it was delicious. That was one of the best fishing days of my life.

Bloody Point Striped Bass

Type: Chesapeake
Region: Mid Bay
Location: Bloody Point

We went out fishing around 9:15 am on May 17,2014. Our captain was my dad and my mom, my brother, and I were the crew. At 12:45 pm I caught a 37” Striped Bass near Bloody Point. It was slightly choppy out and we were trolling with 16 rods. I caught it on rod (#4) on a tandem parachute (bloody point lure) 6 oz. and 3 oz. Pacman chartreuse and two 9” shads.

Brian Zagalsky, age 11, caught this 40”, 23.5 pound rockfish on May 2, 2014, with dad and friend near R86 on day 1 of the MSSA tournament. We had a great day catching 8 fish including two 40” fish and two 39” fish… with Brian catching the two biggest and weighing them in for the tournament, while releasing the rest. This is Brian’s 2nd citation for the Maryland Fishing Challenge 2014.

Opening Day 40 Pounder

Type: Chesapeake
Region: Mid Bay
Location: Thomas Point

Brian Zagalsky, age 11, caught this 46", 40 pound rockfish on Opening Day, April 19, 2014, with brother, dad, and friends near Thomas Point – smashing his previous personal best rockfish of 33” and earning him his 1st rockfish citation for the Maryland Fishing Challenge. It hit the lure furthest out on the boards and 100 feet back, so it was a long hard fight of 200+ feet after the drag screaming run the fish made when it hit. Brian was thrilled to get the new family record after his 8-year old brother, Darin, got 3 citations in the week leading up to Opening Day, and set a record of 45” that only lasted a week. A great way to start the season!
