Rain and Snow Doesn't Stop This Kid

Type: Freshwater
Region: Western
Location: North Branch of Potomac River, Barnum area

I fished at Barnum on 3-2-14 and caught 5 nice Rainbow Trout. The weather was cold, cloudy and rainy and then started to snow. We got a message from Mom saying the roads were getting snow covered up where I live so me and Dad headed home.

Upper Savage Trout Fishing

Type: Freshwater
Region: Western
Location: Upper Savage River

With a break in the weather we were able to get out and do some stream fishing today. I caught 3 Rainbow Trout, 1 Golden Trout and 1 native brook and Dad caught 1 rainbow. There is still a lot of snow and ice along the streams and we saw some places that the ice jams were 4 to 5 foot high.

Do Female Trout Reproduce in the Wild?

Type: Freshwater
Region: Western
Location: Western MD Streams

The nice weather on Saturday allowed us one more stream fishing trip in western Maryland. Me and Dad both did pretty good for trout but I ended up catching the two largest. One was a 17 inch Golden Trout it was a male and had a hooked jaw. The other was a 17 inch Rainbow Trout that was a female and was loaded with eggs. Dad said that he didnít think the female would be able to reproduce in the wild streams because it was a stocked trout and the stream conditions are not good for Rainbow Trout reproduction. Could you tell me if Dad was right on this?

DNR Response: Your Dad is right again. Rainbow Trout do not reproduce well anywhere in Maryland for multiple reasons. Hatchery trout often have eggs in the fall but do not successfully spawn because they are semi-domesticated and donít have the correct instincts or behaviors. Stream conditions in most of our put and take streams are not good enough for successful trout reproduction, due to too much sediment and water temperatures that are too warm during the summer months.

Savage River Rainbow

Type: Freshwater
Region: Western
Location: Savage River

I caught this Rainbow Trout at the Savage River on Saturday after attending the field day and written test part of the hunters education course at New Germany Park. The streams are now very low and clear making trout fishing a little hard and I only ended up catching 2 trout. Good news is that I passed the hunters education safety course and now have my hunters education certificate. I want to thank all the instructors and volunteers for everything they did to make the course interesting and for teaching me about safe hunting.

Rock Bass at Savage River

Type: Freshwater
Region: Western
Location: Savage River

On 9-22-13, I went to Savage with my Dad to try for some more trout. The lake is getting too low to put the Canoe in without going through the mud so we decided just to try the streams. I caught and released this big 11" Rock Bass, the bigest one I ever caught. I think it might qualify for an award. The trout must be moving up into the streams, we caught 6.

Fishing With Dad

Type: Freshwater
Region: Western
Location: Savage Reservoir

On 9-14-13 Me and Dad fished at Savage River Dam from our canoe. Again we caught our limit of some nice Rainbow Trout. We caught some nice perch, here is a picture of two of them. We also caught some Rock Bass and Smallmouth Bass. We noticed a turtle on a log and got close enough to get a good picture before he jumped into the water. Im not sure what kind of turtle this was, could you please let me know what kind of turtle he is?

DNR's Response: Hello Ethan, DNR has a web site listing all the species of turtles/tortoises within Maryland click here to view. We believe you saw a redeared slider, thanks for the inquiry.
