Blue Crab on the Upper Potomac?
Location: Upper Potomac near Rileys Lock
Attached is an image of a female blue crab that I witnessed in the upper Potomac River out of Rileys Lock this past weekend, 12/1/12. This is the 3rd blue crab I have seen in the water here in the last month. How are they getting here? They are of course dead, but they still appear "fresh" and intact. Any ideas?
DNR Response: Blue crabs can be found in a wide range of salinities but it would be highly unlikely for crabs to naturally be that far up the Potomac River. Crabs can survive being out of the water but occasionally a few crabs die during transport. It is possible that someone discarded a few of these dead crabs in the river after buying a bushel. This could account for them being intact and in an area where they wouldn’t normally be found.
