Missed Chance For Me - Trophy Rock For Friend

Type: Chesapeake
Region: Lower Bay
Location: Hooperís Island Lighthouse

Cell phone technology isn't perfect which is why I received a voice mail message 30 minutes too late to join my buddy, Hutch, on the fishing trip of a life time. With Hutch and some of his fellow coworkers on board, the charter boat pulled away from the Tiki Bar dock, located in Solomonís Island, promptly at 6 AM on 12/14/2012. A short 25 minute trip at 25 knots was all it took before the boat slowed down to idle speed and lines began going over the sides Ė this trip began well south of Red Can 74. The Captainís plan was simple - put out 28 lines and troll the channel edge just off the H. I. buoy. However; before the ninth rod could be properly set, pull downs were on 5 of the 8 lines in the water! Woo whoos were shouted and high fives were given all around as it was apparent to both passengers and crew the fish had decided in advance to be cooperative on this fine morning. The next 15 minutes were spent reeling in 5 nice rockfish all in the 34 to 40 inch range. With 20 lines in the water on the next pass over the edge 3 more pull downs and 3 more beauties where hauled in over the gunnels and flopped about the deck. The next pass netted an additional 2 whoppers. With 10 keepers in the box the limit was reached and it was time to head toward home port, the party would be back at dockside by 10 AM. For Hutch it was the best day of Maryland fall rockfish season to date and a great way to end the 2012 season. As for me I missed the boat; but, perhaps itís just as well as I had a banana in my stomach which I had eaten prior to receiving the voicemail message. In the photo, Hutch proudly displays his 40 inch Trophy.
