NEW REPORT

On a Knight's Errand

Type: Chesapeake
Region: Upper Bay
Location: Podickory Point

To earn his next merit badge Cub Scout Ken Ozkaptan, of Arnold MD, was required to catch, clean, cook and eat a fish. Therefore, he tasked Grandpa Hal, the wisest Angler known to him, to lend a helping hand. Anchoring the Whaler 32 off Podickory Point, lines baited with cut Alewives were sent overboard. It took some time for the fish to realize that the dinner bell was ringing but as soon as the sun began to dip below the tree line the fish finder lit up and it appeared that a school of keepers were passing under the boat. One… then two lines went down, one on each side of the boat. On the starboard side, chaos ruled on deck as the rookies onboard scrambled about trying to set the hook and prematurely reaching the fishnet. With steady hands and a calm voice the veteran spoke to his grandson, “Fish on. Take the rod son, open the bail and let him run with it a while. Now close the bail, let the fish set the hook himself. Very good, hold the tip up and reel him in!” On the port side of the boat the first fish of the evening was successfully hooked, hauled in and netted. It was a healthy 22 inch rockfish and the coveted merit badge was one step closer to being earned.
