What is this prehistoric looking creature?
Region: Mid Bay
Location: North Beach
I was wondering if you could help me identify the attached prehistoric creature! I was casting a silver spoon in shallow water near North Beach for rockfish/Bluefish and hooked this strange looking fish. The only thing I could think it could be is something from the gar family. Thanks for your help guys!
DNR Response: That is an Atlantic Needle Fish. They are common in the Chesapeake and coastal bays during the summer months. They can grow to be almost 2’ long. They should not be confused with another member of the Needle Fish family, the Hound Fish which can grow to be 5’ long and can be seen infrequently in the lower Chesapeake Bay. The Hound Fish has a much shorter beak.
