Sometimes you gotta move around to find the fish!
Region: North Eastern
Location: Susquehanna State Park, Deer Creek
The Conowingo Dam reported their first American Shad caught in the fish lift just a few days ago, so I headed up to Susquehanna State Park on Sunday, April 27th. A good crowd of anglers stayed on the river at the dam despite the floodgates opening at 4 p.m. The high water seemed to arouse only the Gizzard Shad, which were so numerous I could feel them bumping against my waders. In the hour I stayed at the dam, nobody caught anything except the occasional foul-hooked Gizzard Shad. Next I drove to Deer Creek, where after about 70 casts with a fly rod I finally landed my first Hickory Shad of the year. After another 70 fruitless casts, I drove down to the mouth of Deer Creek where a line of anglers was hooking one after another. In the last 45 minutes before dark I managed 9 more Hickory Shad. Sometimes you gotta move around to find the fish!
