Maryland Natural Resources Police


Natural Resources Police Officer - Entry Level (08-0535-001)

SALARY:  $40,989 - $53,343   Effective July 1, 2008 This classification has promotional opportunity to NRP Officer, First Class with a salary range of $43,795 – $57,295 (effective July 1, 2008) after one year of satisfactory performance as an NRP Officer.  Salary rules are in effect for current State employees and reinstatements.

POSITION DUTIES: Natural Resources Police Officer is the trainee level of law enforcement work learning to enforce conservation, criminal, traffic, civil and boating laws, rules and regulations.  Employees in this classification do not have supervisory responsibility. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

High School diploma or GED certificate acceptable to the MD State Board of Education as described in the Police Training Commission regulation

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATES: Employees in this classification must complete and successfully pass the Entrance Level Police Training Course required for the MD Police Training Commission and the MD Natural Resources Police within one year of the date of employment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

1. Selection standards for police officer certification are established by the Police and Correctional Training Commission in accordance with Article 41, Section 4-201 of the Annotated Code.  These selection criteria are listed in detail in the Code of Maryland Regulations Title 12, Subtitle 04, Chapter 01 and include the following:

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • A completed background investigation
  • Oral interview
  • Physical examination following offer of employment
  • Possession of a driver’s license valid in the State of Maryland

2. Employees are subject to call 24-hours a day and, therefore, must be reachable at the employee’s residence by telephone or other means.

3. Employees in this classification are required to bear firearms and to demonstrate practical knowledge and proficiency in the safe use and care of firearms on a periodic basis.

4. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 06.01.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.

5. Employees in this classification are subject to assignment in any area of the State.

6. Employees in this classification will serve a two year probation period.

SELECTION PROCESS:  Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be scheduled to a take a physical agility test.  Those applicants that pass the physical agility test will be scheduled to take a written test.  Candidates will be placed on an Eligibility List based on their written test score and ranked in one of three categories: BEST QUALIFIED, BETTER QUALIFIED, OR QUALIFIED. Continuing through the selection process, applicants will be subject to a comprehensive background investigation to include a polygraph, drug screening, physical and psychological examinations, and an oral interview.
