Bear Hunter's Guide to Hunting Black Bears in Maryland |
|
Have you ever wondered about hunting Maryland’s largest land animal, the black
bear? Western Maryland is home to a thriving population of black bears offering
hunters a unique chance to hunt this game animal throughout Garrett and Allegany
counties. The black bear is challenging to hunt - a master of their environment.
They roam vast areas; often traveling several miles a day moving through their
surroundings with an incomparable caution, paying attention to every detail of
their surroundings. For a hunter to take a wild black bear is a true
achievement. It is possible, though, for you to rise to the challenge and be one
of Maryland’s successful bear hunters, even if you are new to bear hunting. For
hunters new to bear hunting, DNR has put together an informational ‘Bear
Hunter’s Guide to Hunting Black Bears in Maryland.’ The booklet
includes key information to get you started in bear hunting - an overview of
Maryland’s prior bear hunts, bear-hunting regulations, tips on planning a bear
hunt including necessary equipment, bear-hunting techniques, how to care for
your bear after the harvest - and a lot more. |

Helping Maryland's
Declining Quail Population |
|
In the past, the pursuit of bobwhite quail was among the most popular types of
hunting and represented a valued part of Maryland's rural culture.
Unfortunately, bobwhite quail have declined by more than 90% in the last few
decades. Habitat
loss and fragmentation continues to be the greatest threat. Fortunately, a
variety of cost-share and incentive programs are now available to help
landowners and farmers restore vital habitat.

Mourning Dove
Banding Results |
|
Since the summer of 2003, Maryland along with 28 other states has been banding
mourning doves during July and August. Birds are marked with U. S. Fish and
Wildlife Service metal leg bands containing a unique identification number and a
toll-free telephone number that hunters can use to report the band. Hunters
reporting bands are asked to provide the harvest location and date. During the
four years of banding, over 150,000 doves have been banded across the country.
In Maryland, 500-700 doves have been banded each year. |

Purple
Loosestrife is Invading our Wetlands: Can You Help Us Find It and Remove It? |
|
Purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicariais) is a highly invasive non-native plant
that threatens significant portions of Maryland's marsh, swamp, and coastal
habitats. By crowding out native wetland species, purple loosestrife can reduce
biodiversity, eliminate food sources for marsh animals, and change water flow
patterns. Find out what you can do to help stop the spread of this invasive
species.
