Trail Access Green Ridge State Forest
Trail Distance 18 mile circuit trail
Directions to Trail From I-68 take exit 62
Travel Fifteen Mile Creek Road south
Go straight at the Green Ridge Road/Fifteen Mile Road Intersection
Follow Green Ridge Road to Mertens Avenue
Turn left onto Mertens Avenue
Follow Mertens to East Valley Road (parking spots available on East Valley)
Trail Dirt, rock, gravel and clay make up the surface of these roads
Vehicles Permitted Any registered motor vehicle or any unregistered four wheeler, motorcycle or snowmobile with a DNR off-road vehicle permit. Must be 12 and older to operate.
Hazards/Restrictions Be aware of two-way traffic – Licensed vehicles operate in both directions. Stay alert to changing terrain and always maintain a safe speed. Helmet and eye protection are required.
One-Way Non-licensed vehicles operate counter clockwise direction only.
Potable Water None
Natural Features Oak-hickory forest located in the Allegheny Mountain chain in the Ridge and Valley Province of Maryland. Visitors will pass the highest point in Green Ridge State Forest along the trail. Wildlife is plentiful in the forest and includes whitetail deer, wild turkey, and squirrel.
Historic/Cultural Features The forest in general is a living museum. Native American artifacts that include spear points, lance points and other tools have been found in large numbers. Civil War artifacts have also been found. Mini balls, cannon balls and more reflect the rich history of the area. A stop by the headquarters allows guests the opportunity to view some of the artifacts found.
