The Friends of Assateague (FOASP) was established in 2000.
- How many members or volunteers are in the group?
For the past three years FOASP has had between 175 and 200 members. One third of our members are Maryland residents the rest are from out of state or Canada. Some of our members take advantage of the many opportunities to volunteer at Assateague State Park. Those opportunities (Camp Hosting, helping with Environmental Education, working on maintenance projects, etc.) are coordinated by the staff of the park.

- Does your group have a mission statement, or main objectives. If so, what are they?
The mission of the Friends of Assateague State Park is to enhance Assateague State Park's physical, financial, and outreach programs.
- Do you have fundraisers throughout the year?
The only recurring fundraiser is annual dues. Our membership dues covers the cost of all communications, including four (4) newsletter and special mailings. What dues are left at the end of the year goes toward donations to the park. We have received donations for t-shirts, memorials, the nature center, and from a movie production.
- How are funds raised? (Fundraisers, membership dues)
Dues and donations. We have received donations for t-shirts, yard flags, beach bags, memorials, the nature center, and from a movie production (the Wedding Crashers).
- In your opinion, what are the most interesting or highlighted features of the park?
It is the only state park in Maryland where you can camp along side the Atlantic Ocean. Wild horses and deer roam freely through the campground. While some days can be hot and buggy, there are cool nights, swimming, fishing, boating and surfing. The staff at Assateague State Park, including life guards, maintenance workers, park administration, and office personnel are all trained to meet the special needs of people camping by the beach.

- What would you say are some of the benefits of becoming a member?
The Friends of Assateague State Park mails out four (4) newsletters a year to keep members informed and provides a variety of volunteer opportunities. We also inform members of volunteer opportunities that have been requested by the ASP staff.
