Requirement for Junior Ranger Explorer Level
This level is designed to promote family visits to Maryland State Forests and Parks and
increase the Junior Ranger's awareness of park facilities, natural features, history and
geography.
- The Junior Ranger must have reached at least the Expert level.
- The Junior Ranger will have one (1) year to complete the Explorer level.
- The Junior Ranger must visit at least three (3) Maryland State Forests or Parks of their
choice. At each facility, the child must complete the required questionnaire corresponding
to that site. Questionnaires will be available at the base forest or park. Completed
questionaires shall be returned to the Junior Ranger Coordinator at the base forest or
park.
- The Junior Ranger must participate in at least three (3) hands-on activities at the base
forest or park. The activities will be pre-arranged with the Junior Ranger Coordinator and
selected from the following groups:
Programming
- participate in the presentation of any interpretive program
- help out at a Visitor Center for at least 4 hours
Maintenance
- pick up litter/recyclables in a designated area
- help with trail work, i.e. spreading mulch, marking trails
- campsite work, i.e. cleaning grills, raking camp pads
Operations/Law Enforcement
- complete a safety inspection on a patrol vehicle
- help at special event at the base park
- work with a ranger for at least one (1) hour and write a report on what you did
Resource Management
- help with a tree inspection
- inspect a trail for erosion damage and make suggestions on how to correct
- plant several trees, shore grass or a flowerbed
AWARDS: Explorer patch, base forest/park pin, forest/park pin from each of the sites
visited.
