State Forest and Park Service Guide to Safe Trail Use
Maryland's Public Lands Trail System offers abundant opportunities for outdoor recreation. As part of your responsibility as a trail user,
we ask that you practice courtesy and common sense so that everyone's trail experience is safe and enjoyable.
Please observe the following guidelines:
- Respect the trails - clean up litter; pack out what is packed in. Remember, Maryland's State Forests and Parks are "Trash-Free."
- Respect the environment. Stay on marked trails. Don't blaze new trails.
- Respect other trail users. Pedestrians have the right of way. All trail users should travel on the right and move left to pass. Give an audible warning when passing others along the trail or approaching a blind curve.
- Trail users should move off to the side of the trail when coming to a complete stop.
- Become the eyes and ears of the trail system. Report problems, ie. washed out bridges, or downed trees and debris to the forest park staff by calling PARK WATCH at 1-800-825-PARK.
- Help maintain trails by giving back to the trails you use. Volunteer your time to get involved with trail maintance and make a donation to the Trail Stewardship Program.
It is your responsibility to have the necessary skills, knowledge and equipment for a safe and environmentally sensitive visit.
The facilities and services of the Department of Natural Resources are available to all without regard to race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin, or physical, mental or sensory impairment.
