National Trails Day – Patapsco Valley State Park
On Saturday, June 5, 2010, Patapsco Valley State Park hosted National Trails Day at both the McKeldin and Avalon/Orange Grove areas. This was the biggest volunteer trail event in the park’s history with 216 volunteers donating 864 hours and accomplishing the following:

4 re-routes totaling approximately 600 feet of new trail
2 armored stream crossings
2 armored trail sections
1 retaining wall
3 sets of steps on hiking only sections of trail
8 trails re-blazed and corridor pruned for a total of approximately 20 miles
Multiply grade reversals built and drainage to existing cleaned out
Cleaned and stabilized one existing culvert
One 25 foot turnpike built
Approximately 950 pounds of trash removed from river
One 20 foot boardwalk installed
The event was family friendly and a good time was had by all. The day was sponsored by all Maryland REI stores who provided free shirts and food. Crew leaders were supplied by park staff and volunteers, MORE (Mid-Atlantic Off-Road Enthusiasts), the Friends of Patapsco Valley and Heritage Greenway, and Trail Conservancy Inc. The event was promoted by FOX45 on Friday, June 4.
