National Hunting and Fishing Day introduced
Maryland's outdoor recreation seekers to many conservation groups
they could become actively involved with and was designed to bring
individuals and families outdoors to experience the fun and
camaraderie that goes along with outdoor recreation.
Highlights included a variety of exhibits and
events planning to showcase ways people interact with wildlife, both
from an historical and modern point of view. Visitors learned about
shooting sports as well as fishing techniques. Children enjoyed
spin casting, archery, and target shooting, along with many other
activities on the grounds with skilled instructors. We also
featured Backwoods Bluegrass, a live bluegrass band that entertained
throughout the day.
I would like to extend our appreciation to all
of our sponsors, vendors and exhibiters, who made this day both
educational and enjoyable for so many.
The objective of National Hunting and Fishing
Day is to use outdoor recreational pursuits to promote an interest
in wildlife habitats and instill a conservation ethic in our
citizens. The day's activities are designed to get individuals and
families outdoors and acquaint them with the area's unique natural
resources, and to promote traditional outdoor sports and
conservation.
Outdoor recreation is an important part of our
national heritage. On National Hunting and Fishing Day, we
celebrate the remarkable progress sportsmen and women have made in
conserving our environment while recognizing outdoor enthusiasts of
all ages who have worked to protect our natural resources.
I hope you and your family will join us next
year. Mark your calendar now for National Hunting and Fishing Day
Sept. 26, 2009.
Sincerely,
Patricia Allen
